Season Ends In SSAC Quarterfinals For Lady Rams

GULFPORT, Miss-- The University of Mobile volleyball team fell 0-3 (20-25, 28-30, 18-25) to Shorter University in the SSAC Tournament Quarterfinals Friday evening at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Kelly Sherling led Mobile with 10 kills and hit .318, while Alyson Kovacs added 7 kills and 3 blocks and Shea McBee finished with 6 kills and 4 blocks.

Katy McCollister led with 13 digs, Melody Tenney finished with 17 assists and 4 aces, and Kaylee McGrew added 15 assists for Mobile.

Shorter out hit Mobile .229 to .130. Loren Olive produced a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs, while Ashley Walton added 11 kills.

The opening set was basically point-for-point until Shorter broke a 16-16 tie with a 5-0 run to take a 21-16 lead, the largest of the set. Mobile closed to 21-19, but Shorter held on and grabbed the 25-20 win.

Mobile came out on fire in the 2nd set as a trio of aces from Tenney sparked a 5-0 run to start the set. The Lady Rams held the lead until Shorter used a 6-2 run to tie it up 10-10. The teams traded leads from there and Mobile found itself down 21-18, but answered with a 6-1 run thanks to three kills from McBee to make it 24-22. Mobile then failed on two chances with set point and Shorter took the lead and grabbed the win at 30-28.

Shorter jumped ahead 8-1 in the final set and lead the entire way.

Mobile finishes the season 15-16. The Lady Rams were the No. 3 seed in the West and Shorter is the No. 2 seed in the East.
