MOBILE, Ala-- The 11th-ranked University of Mobile women's soccer team defeated 16th-ranked Embry-Riddle 3-2 in a 2010 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round game Saturday at the University of Mobile.

The Lady Rams (13-6-1) will advance to the final site of the 2010 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship in Decatur, Ala. and face 2nd-ranked Lee University. Embry-Riddle ends the season with a 14-3-3 record.

The Lady Eagles controlled much of the pace, out shooting Mobile 19-9 for the game and finishing with an 11-5 edge in shots on target, but Mobile goalkeeper Samantha Bird was up to the challenge, finishing with 9 saves, including 4 in the second half, while keeping the visitors off the board.

Embry-Riddle started the scoring in the 21st minute, when Valerie Obita intercepted a miss-kick from Mobile and put the ball in an empty goal, with the keeper at the top of the box.

Just two minutes later, Mobile answered when Missy Stovall scored after receiving a free kick from Christy Lachappelle in front of the goal. Stovall camped out in front of the near post and just got enough of the ball to sneak it between the goalkeeper and the post.

In the 29th minute, the Lady Eagles took a 2-1 lead when Martine Olsen banged a 50-yard free kick off the cross bar, into the net.

The score stayed that way until the break, and in the second half, despite only taking three shots, the Lady Rams rallied with a pair of goals.

The equalizer came in the 51st minute when Rebekah Counce ran in and headed home a corner kick from Lachappelle.

Then, with under 10 minutes to play and fans thinking about overtime, Lachappelle took matters into her own hands. In the 81st minute, she received a pass just-outside the 18-yard box, got the ball under control, weaved passed a defender and struck gold with a rocket past the goalkeeper that sent the players and fans into a frenzy.
