Mobile Men Move On To NAIA Semifinals (Friday @ 4)

ORANGE BEACH, Ala-- The 9th-seeded University of Mobile men's soccer team advanced to the Semifinals of the 2010 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championships by knocking off 2008 National Champion Bethel University (Tenn.) 3-2 Wednesday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

The Rams (17-3-2) will battle No. 4 seed Notre Dame (Ohio) Friday at 4 pm. The Falcons sport an unblemished 22-0 record.

Armando Orozco put the Wildcats of Bethel on the board first with a goal in the 14th minute, when he found a clearing in the box and punched it into the net.

Not to be out-done, Deshorn Brown tied it up for the Rams when he got a knockdown at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped it past the keeper to tie it at 1-1 in the 33rd minute. But, with just 1:47 left in the opening period the Wildcats got a boost from Joseph Omondi, who unleashed a rocket from about 23 yards out after Orozco rolled a free kick over to him.

The second half was all Mobile, as the Rams netted a pair of goals for the victory. Chris Dillon tied it up at 2-2 in the 53rd minute when he received a free kick from Ruben Diaz inside the box and found room in front of the goal to roll it home.

Then, with just 58 seconds left in regulation, Onesimus Ikungo took a feed from Diaz, worked his way inside the far corner of the 18-yard box and beat the keeper far post to send the Rams to the Round of 4. Mobile has six Top-4 finishes all-time at nationals. This is the furthest Mobile has advanced since winning it all in 2002. Mobile is 3-3 all-time in Semifinal action.

Despite the five combined goals, both goalkeepers turned in brilliant performances. Chaz Dachenhaus grabbed 9 saves for Bethel, while Mobile's Jason Williams finished with 7 saves, including a pair of brilliant saves on breakaway shot attempts from Mario Vila Boa.

Mobile out shot Bethel 25-20 and finished with a 12-9 edge in shots on target. The Rams are 2-0 against the Wildcats this season, and got sweet revenge after Bethel bounced Mobile from the Quarterfinals in 2008.
