JACKSON, Miss-- Belhaven University used a strong 2nd half to take down the University of Mobile 88-73 in women's basketball action Saturday evening.
Mobile (10-4, 1-1) hosts Auburn University-Montgomery Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 pm. Belhaven improves to 12-5, 1-1.
Mobile out shot Belhaven 52% to 37% from the floor in the opening half and took a 42-34 lead into the break, but the Lady Blazers shot an astounding 65% in the final half, while holding Mobile to 44% to outscore the Lady Rams 54-31 over the final 20 minutes.
Morgan Crawford led Mobile with 18 points, Alice Honnery added 16 ponts and 10 rebounds, and Morgan Melancon finished with 15 points and 4 assists for Mobile. Adrienne Mackay added 11 rebounds and 5 steals.
Regena Jackson led Belhaven with 22 points thanks to a 12-for-14 effort from the free throw line, while Sarah Carr added 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.
Mobile started out on fire, scoring the game's first six points on a pair of old fashioned 3-point plays and then pushing the lead to 12-2 after back-to-back 3-pointers from Crawford and Alyssa Lane. The Lady Rams held the lead until Belhaven fought back to tie it up at 31-31 with 3:31 left in the half, but Mobile finished the half with an 11-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Melancon.
The Lady Rams kept that advantage for the first 5:02 of the 2nd half, but Belhaven tied it up at 49-49 and took their first lead at 51-49 on a bucket from Sarah Carr. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes until the game was tied 59-59 with 9:43 left. Belhaven went on a 9-1 run to grab an 8-point lead from there, and then broke open a 69-65 lead with a 15-3 run to grab a 16-point lead and put the game away.
