Blazers Top Rams In NAIA Men's Action

JACKSON, Miss-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team could not overcome a slow start Saturday evening, losing 66-76 at Belhaven University in SSAC West Division play.

Mobile (8-6, 1-1) will host Southern University at New Orleans Monday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 pm in non-conference play.

Ji Kimbrough led Mobile with 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Donte Walker added 12 points and Kevin Calloway finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Rob Wallace led Belhaven with 23 points after shooting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and Nathaniel Roche added 16 points for the Blazers.

For the game, Mobile shot only 39%, including a 37% performance in an opening half that saw the team score only 27 points. Belhaven shot 54% from the floor and finished 23-of-34 from the free throw line, compared to 10-of-23 for Mobile at the charity stripe.

Mobile led only once in the opening half when they took a 22-21 lead with 5:40 to go on a layup from Calloway. But, the offense went cold the rest of the way, as Belhaven finished the half with a 16-5 run to take a 37-27 lead into the break.

Belhaven built a 55-35 lead 7:18 into the 2nd half, but the Rams fought back with a 17-4 run to cut it to 59-52 with 8:10 left, as Calloway scored four of the final six points in the run. The Rams then got within striking distance with 4:06 left when a jumper from Kimbrough brought them within 60-64, but Belhaven used an 8-2 spurt to regain control.
