HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The 25th-ranked University of Mobile softball team opened the 2011 season with an 8-4 victory over Southern Nazarene University.
Victoria Buie went the distance to pick up the win, allowing 3 earned runs on 9 hits and fanning 10.
Mayles Rodriguez and Holli McLeod each went 2-4 with 2 runs scored from the top two spots in the lineup, while Jessica Rogers went 2-4 with 2 RBI.
Southern Naz jumped on Buie in the top of the 2nd with a 4-spot on 5 hits. Three of the runs scored with two outs and two doubles aided the cause.
The Mobile bats answered back in the bottom of the 3rd with a 4-spot of their own on 3 hits and an error. A walk and error started the inning and McLeod opened the scoring with a RBI-single. Then, with 2 outs, Kaci Pribanic singled home Hannah Beth Baker and Rogers followed with a 2-run double.
While Buie held the Southern Nazarene bats at bay, the Mobile offense put the game away the very next inning with 3 more runs on 3 hits and another error. After two quick outs started the frame, three straight Mobile singles followed, with Baker scoring the winning run on McLeod's base hit. An error then capped the scoring, bringing home a pair of runs.
