NEW ORLEANS, La-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team fell 64-52 at Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foe Xavier University-New Orleans Monday evening.
Mobile (15-11) actually out shot Xavier 49% to 36% from the field, but turned the ball over 33 times, while Xavier committed only 15 turnovers. Xavier finished with 24 steals, versus only 6 for the Lady Rams.
Alice Honnery led Mobile with 12 points and 7 rebounds, Alyssa Lane added 11 points and 7 rebounds and Adrienne Mackay finished with 10 points. Brittany Powell led Xavier with 18 points in the game.
The teams battled back-and-forth early until Mobile turned a 12-12 into a 19-14 lead thanks to four points from Davina Jefferson. But, over the next 4:34, Xavier went on a 12-2 run to grab a 26-21 lead as Mobile turned the ball over 9 times. Xavier took a 33-28 lead into the half.
Xavier held the lead throughout the final half, despite Mobile's best efforts to rally. Down 43-34 with 15:24 left, Mobile used a 8-1 run to cut the deficit to 44-42 with 11:47 to play on Adrienne Mackay's three-point play. From there, Xavier kept Mobile at bay until back-to-back Honnery baskets pulled the Lady Rams within one score at 53-50 with 4:36 left. Xavier scored the next 11 points to pull away as the Lady Rams were held scoreless for 4:08 after pulling within 53-50.
Mobile hosts Belhaven Thursday at 5:30 pm in the team's final regular season home game.
