Jacobs Gets 700th Win; Rams Bash Badgers

MOBILE, Ala-- Friday's SSAC West series-opening 7-3 win over rival Spring Hill was more than just a 1-0 start in conference play for the University of Mobile baseball team, it was history, as Head Coach Mike Jacobs notched his 700th career victory.

Jacobs began his collegiate coaching career in 1990 when he started the UMobile baseball program, and he has racked up a 700-443-2 record in his 21+ years at Mobile. In that time, he has guided the Rams to 13 seasons of 30+ victories, 3 seasons of 40+ wins, and one NAIA College World Series appearance in 2001. Mobile won a school-record 43 games in 2008.

His leadership has produced 28 players that went on to sign professional baseball contracts, including current Philadelphia Phillies reliever J.C. Romero.

The winning pitcher in the game was Michael King, who worked all 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, while fanning 3. The Badgers struck for 3 runs on 6 hits in the 2nd and 3rd innings, but King allowed only 3 hits over the final 4 frames.

The top six spots in the Mobile order each had hits, led by a 3-3 effort from DH Sam Mahoney, who drove in 3 and scored twice. Ryan Waltman and Josh Blaylock added RBIs for Mobile.

Mobile struck first on a Mahoney RBI-hit in the bottom of the 1st, but then the Badgers lept ahead 3-1 with their 2nd and 3rd inning damage.

As King settled down, the Mobile offense went to work in the 4th, plating 3 runs only only 1 hit, as a Badger error on Waltman's bunt attempt plated three and put Waltman at 3rd for Blaylock's game-winning sac fly.

Mobile then capped the scoring with a 3-spot in the 5th inning, started by a Ben Negus bunt single. Mahoney provided a 2-run single, while Waltman doubled home one.
