Softball Wins Pair At WCU Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The University of Mobile softball team picked up a pair of victories at the William Carey Invitational Friday, beating William Woods 2-0 and taking down LSU-Alexandria 5-1 in 6 innings.

In the opener, Victoria Buie (11-3) dominated William Woods by striking out 11 hitters in a complete-game, 3-hit shutout effort. She walked none. MacKenzie Bowden took the loss after giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings, while walking 2 and fanning 5.

Mayles Rodriguez drove in a run and scored a run at the top of the Mobile lineup, while Milagros Lozada produced a RBI-double and Ally Scott finished 1-3 with 1 run scored.

Mobile started the scoring in the 1st after Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on Lozada's RBI-double. While Buie retired the first 12 batters she faced, the Lady Rams added an insurance run in the top of the 5th as Scott went the other way with a leadoff double and later scored on a sac fly from Rodriguez.

William Woods finally got its first hit with 2 outs in the 5th, but Buie fanned the next batter to end the frame. They then put two on with 2 outs in the 7th, but Buie twirled her 11th K of the game to end it.

Game two saw Haley Baker work all 6 innings to pick up the victory, by scattering 6 hits and 2 walks and allowing only 1 run. The Mobile offense was opportunistic with 5 runs scored on 5 hits.

Mayles Rodriguez finished 2-3, while Milagros Lozada and Korie Fontenot each collected 1 hit, scored 1 run and drove in 2 runs.

A single and error put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 1st and Lozada put Mobile on the board with a 2-run single to center.

Baker then worked around a single and a walk in the bottom of the 1st and Mobile went on to put up a single tally in the 2nd and two more runs in the 3rd.

A leadoff walk and error plated one in the 2nd and then Fontenot did the damage in the 3rd with a 2-run home run to center.

Mobile (18-6) next plays at Auburn University-Montgomery Sunday, Mar. 20 to open up SSAC West play.
