JACKSON, Miss-- The 15th-ranked University of Mobile softball team battled 9th-ranked Belhaven to a split in Saturday's SSAC West twin bill. Mobile won the opener 11-3 in a 5-inning run-rule game, while Belhaven took the finale 8-4.
Mobile (23-7, 5-1) hosts Auburn University-Montgomery for a conference doubleheader Wednesday, Mar. 30 at 4 pm.
Game one saw the 15th-ranked Lady Rams swat three homers.
Mayles Rodriguez finished 2-4 with 2 RBI and 1 homer, Holli McLeod finished 2-4 with a solo homer, Milagros Lozada finished 1-3 with 3 RBI and a home run and Jessica Swanson went 3-3 with 2 RBI at the plate for Mobile.
Victoria Buie got the win in relif by limiting the Lady Blazers to 1 run on 2 hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Mobile turned a leadoff walk in the 1st into 3 runs thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Kirstyn Joiner and a 2-run single from Swanson. One inning later, Rodriguez and McLeod went back-to-back with solo homers to stake Mobile to a 5-0 lead. A 3-run bomb by Lozada ignited a 5-run 4th inning to allow for the run-rule margin of 8 runs.
In the finale, Belhaven starter Sarah Burns held the Lady Rams hitless for 4 innings, while the Belhaven offense pounded out 8 runs on 7 hits through 3 innings of play.
Mobile tried to battle back with a 2-run single from Mayles Rodriguez in the 5th and a 2-run Belhaven error in the 6th, and they brough the potential tying run to the plate in the inning with the bases juiced, by Burns induced a foul pop to end the threat.
Burns gave up 2 earned runs on 7 hits in the complete game effort for the Lady Blazers. Jessica Rogers finished 2-3 at the plate for Mobile.
