Rice And Urmeneta Honored By GCAC

 

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference released the GCAC Player of the Week awards for the week ending March 14 Wednesday.
 
Maegan Rice was named the GCAC Women's Golfer of the Week, while Jesus Urmeneta was tabbed the GCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
 
Rice, a senior from Florence, Ala., won the Spring Hill Badger Invite by shooting a 16-over 160 (78, 82). In three spring tournaments this year, she has finished 1st twice and 2nd once.
 
The UM men's tennis team went 2-1 in three conference matches on the week, while Urmeneta, a junior from San Pedro Sula, Honduras won all of his singles and doubles matches.
 
In Mobile's loss to William Carey, Urmeneta won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and teamed up with Gustavo Godoi to win 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. In a 6-3 win over Belhaven, he won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. He capped the week with a fine performance against Tougaloo, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
 
The Rams (6-2) next play March 20 at Xavier University-New Orleans at 9 am. The UM women's golf team will next compete at the Embry-Riddle Bash at the Beach April 9-11 in Daytona Beach, FL.
