Rams Drop Saturday Twin Bill To Wolfpack

WESTWEGO, La-- Loyola University swept Saturday's SSAC West baseball twin bill from the University of Mobile by scores of 2-1 and 5-2.

The Wolfpack took the opener 2-1 in 7 innings as the Rams could not capitalize on 6 hits and 6 walks.

George Smith got the win for Loyola by striking out 7 Rams in the complete-game effort and allowing only 1 earned run to out-duel Josh Blaylock, who took the loss for Mobile after giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits in 6 innings of work. He struck out 4 and walked 3.

Justin Beck went 2-4 with 1 run scored at the top of the Mobile lineup, while Sam Mahoney finished 2-4 with 1 RBI.

After the Rams wasted a leadoff single in the top of the 1st, the Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning. From there, pitching ruled the day as 0's were put up on the board until the 7th.

Mobile's best chance to score early came in the 4th when they loaded the bases with 1 out, but saw Smith strike out a pair to end the threat. They loaded the bags again the 6th with 2 outs, but again could not push home a run.

They finally scored in the 7th after a pair of 2-out walks loaded the bases and Mahoney singled home Beck to tie it up. Ryne Phillips was gunned down trying to score on the play. But, the tie was short-lived as the Wolfpack got back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom half of the inning, and then Blaylock threw away a sacrifice bunt to bring home the winning run.

Taylor Domengeaux tallied all 9 innings to pick up the win in the finale for Loyola, limiting Mobile to 2 runs on 8 hits, despite striking out none. Blake Hanson took the loss after giving up 3 earned runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings of mound work.

At the dish, Jeremy Williams, Ryne Phillips and Josh Blaylock all collected 2 hits. Evan Turkish finished 2-4 with 3 RBI for Loyola.

Mobile scored first as Justin Beck led off with a single, swiped 2nd and came around to score on William's base hit, but the team could not score again until the 9th. By that time, Loyola had built a 5-1 lead thanks to a 3-run 4th and a 2-run 6th.

They sent nine batters to the plate in the 4th and Turkish hit a 3-run bomb to do the damage.

Mobile (23-14, 5-7) will next visit Spring Hill Tuesday, April 5 at 6 pm for a non-conference game.
