Rams Split Twin Bill With Thomas University

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Thomas University Wednesday, winning the opener 10-0 in a run-rule 6-inning win and falling 9-4 in an 8-inning finale.

Mobile (25-15) hosts Shorter University for a 3-game set this weekend, beginning with a 2 pm contest Friday.

Game one saw the Rams roll behind 9 hits and 8 walks and a strong pitching performance from Chris Peacock.

Peacock went all 6 innings on the mound and limited the NightHawks to 3 hits, while fanning a pair in the shutout effort. Jeremy Jones took the loss for Thomas after giving up 6 earned runs on 5 walks and 9 hits in 5 innings.

Cody Barber finished 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI at the plate for Mobile, while Justin Beck added a 2-2 day out of the 2-hole. Ben Negus and Jeremy Williams each finished 1-3 with 2 RBI.

The Rams scored in every inning but the 2nd, with the biggest innings coming in the form of a 3-run 3rd and a 4-run 5th.

After a 2-out error kept the 3rd inning alive, Ryne Phillips singled home one run and two batters later, Barber popped a 2-run double off the left field fence.

Mobile then put the game away with a 4-run 5th, as Negus produced a RBI-hit and Williams ripped a 2-out, 2-run single up the middle. The game ended in the 6th when Thomas University loaded the bases with 2 walks and a hit-batsman and then walked Negus to force home the winning run.

In the finale, Mobile finished with 7 errors and Thomas University's Sean Medlin picked up the victory with 3 innings of 1-hit, shutout relief. Cameron White took the loss after giving up 3 runs on 1 hit in .1 innings of relief.

Keith Granger went 1-3 with 2 RBI at the plate for the Rams, while Jeremy Williams, Sam Mahoney and Brady King finished 1-3 with 1 run scored. Travis Flannagan finished 3-3 with 6 RBI for Thomas, while John Cervantes went 3-5 at the dish.

The NightHawks opened the game by scoring 4 runs through the first 3 innings to build a 4-2 lead, but Mobile bounced back to tie it up with a 2-run 5th on a Ryne Phillips RBI single and Cody Barber sac fly.

Both teams wasted chances to win the game in the 7th, as Thomas loaded the bases with nobody out, only to see Mobile reliever Josh Blaylock get out of the jam with 3 k's. Mobile then put two on to start the bottom of the frame with an error and walk, but Brady King was gunned down trying to score from 2nd on a single to shallow right.

In the 8th, Thomas did not waste their chance. After a leadoff out, a single and two walks loaded the bases and Flannagan provided the big blow with a 3-run double.
