MOBILE, Ala-- The 8th-ranked University of Mobile softball team dropped both ends of a SSAC West doubleheader to Spring Hill College by identical 3-1 scores Tuesday evening.
Mobile (31-13, 11-7) will host 2nd-ranked William Carey Thursday at 4 pm for a twin bill to close out the regular season.
In game one, Samantha Brooks went the distance for the win and made Stephanie Fair's 3-run 1st-inning home run stand up in the 3-1 decision. Brooks limited Mobile to 1 run on 3 hits and worked around 5 walks.
Victoria Buie took the loss for Mobile after giving up 3 runs on only 2 hits in the complete-game effort, while striking out 7.
In that 1st inning, a walk and hit-batsman put two runners on, and Fair cranked a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for the decisive blow.
Mobile tried to rally in the 5th as Korie Fontenot produced a pinch-hit RBI-double, but that was all of the scoring they would get. The Lady Rams put two runners on in each of the first three innings, but could not push across an early run.
Fair finished 1-2 with the 3-run homer for Spring Hill, while Jessica Rogers went 1-2 with 2 walks for Mobile and Fontenot went 1-2 with 1 RBI.
Game two saw Mobile cling to a 1-0 lead for 5 innings before Spring Hill won it late. Brooks again picked up the win with 7 innings of 7-hit, 1-run ball. She walked none and fanned three. Kamaron strickland took the loss for Mobile after giving up 2 earned runs on 11 hits in 7 innings of action. She walked a pair and k'd 5.
Brooke Turlich, Haley Brown and Katelyn Hinson finished with 2 hits apiece for the Badgers, while Kayla Tompkins drove in a pair. The top two hitters in the Mobile order, Mayles Rodriguez and Holli McLeod, finished with 2 hits apiece, while the rest of the order went a combined 3-20 against Brooks.
Mobile opened the scoring with a single tally in the 3rd when Erica Bracey doubled to left and came around to score on a Badger error. After the Lady Rams wasted a 1st and 3rd, no-out situation in the 4th, the Badgers' offense came alive in the final two innings.
Spring Hill took the lead for good in the 6th when an error and single put two on, and Tompkins delivered her 2-run double to right-center. They added an insurance run in the 7th on Holli Smith's RBI-hit.
The Lady Rams put two runners on with 2 outs in the 7th, but came up empty.
