COLUMBUS, Ga-- The University of Mobile softball team saw its three-day run at the 2011 SSAC Championships come to an end Saturday morning, as the team fell 4-2 to No. 16 Shorter University.
Kacey Hawkshead picked up the win for the Lady Hawks by limiting Mobile to 2 runs on 7 hits in the complete-game effort. Kamaron Strickland took the loss after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5.2 innings of action.
Jessica Rogers went 3-4 at the plate to lead the Lady Rams, while Milagros Lozada finished 2-3 and Mayles Rodriguez went 1-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.
Kara Pollock drove in a pair of runs for Shorter, while Jessica Womble and Libby Munson each collected a pair of hits.
Mobile opened the scoring with a single tally in the top of the 1st, as Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and later came around to score on a RBI-groundout by Kirstyn Joiner.
Shorter answered right away with a pair in the 1st and single tallies in the 2nd and 4th innings. After a quick out in the 1st, three straight hitters recorded hits, with Pollock singling home a pair up the middle. The eventual winning run came in the 2nd, when Shorter turned a leadoff walk into a run with a pair of bunts and a sac fly.
Mobile (34-17) will now await the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championships May 19-25 in Gulf Shores, AL. Mobile will earn a bid as the host team.
