ORANGE BEACH, Ala-- A 4-0 second-half Mobile lead turned in to a 5-4 double-overtime victory over Westminster College for the University of Mobile women's soccer team Saturday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
Playing the role of hero for Mobile was 2010 3rd-Team NAIA All-American Christy Lachappelle. The junior took a pass from Molley Ward, juked a defender and kicked the ball into the far corner with only 1:35 left in the final overtime period.
Lachappelle finished the game with two goals and one assist, as she also scored in the 50th minute to give the Lady Rams a 4-0 lead.
Bekah Counce started the Mobile scoring just five minutes in, when she collected a loose ball off of a free kick and deposited it into the back of the net. Kassie Ruff and Jesslyn Fagundes added goals in the 26th and 28th minutes, respectively.
Ruff's goal was a bending ball from just-outside the 18-yard box, that snuck inside the near corner of the goal.
Westminster's torrid comeback started in the 52nd minute when Margo Hickman capitalized on a penalty kick, and she added their second goal just seven minutes later.
In the 78th minute, Heather Hillam got her head on a Sarah Swenson corner and redirected it into the goal for the tying score.
Mobile out shot Westminster 19-14 and had a 9-2 edge in corners taken. Lorna Brownlie made six saves in the winning effort.
Mobile (2-1-1) hosts Indiana Wesleyan Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 pm.
