MOBILE, Ala-- The 15th-ranked University of Mobile women's soccer team toppled 5th-ranked Martin Methodist 1-0 on Christy Lachappelle's overtime goal.
Mobile (4-1-1) will host Shorter University Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 pm to open Southern States Athletic Conference play.
The Lady Rams won despite getting out shot 16-4, as Lorna Brownlie made five saves to pick up the shutout victory.
With the teams playing a scoreless 90 minutes to force overtime, Lachappelle wasted little time in notching her second overtime game-winner of the season just 21 seconds into the extra period.
The junior got the ball, out-ran the defense to the 18-yard box, made a move inside toward the goal and hammered it home inside the far post to end the game.
The Redhawks also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks and upped the tempo late in the second half to try and win it. Brownlie made a leaping save in the 75th minute, and then Kelsie Ruff and Rebekah Counce blocked shots within the next six minutes to keep the 5th-ranked visitors off the board.
