Mahoney Signs With Gateway Grizzlies

SAUGET, Ill-- Former University of Mobile baseball player Sam Mahoney became the 30th UMobile baseball player to sign a professional contract when he inked with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League.

In his lone season with the Rams after transferring from Ohio University, the catcher hit .345, slugged .515 and drove in a team-leading 41 runs. He also posted a .454 on-base percentage and led the team with 14 doubles.

Mahoney was the only Ram to play and start all 52 games in 2011, and he showed a keen eye at the dish with 27 walks and only 24 strikeouts.

Prior to Ohio University and UMobile, Mahoney spent time with the University of South Carolina and Northwest Florida State College.

He is a native of Columbia, S.C., and prepped at Wando High School.

There are 13 teams in the Frontier League and another former Ram, Nelson Curry, plays for the Windy City ThunderBolts.
