UMobile Baseball Opens 2011 With Two Wins

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team opened the 2011 season by sweeping a doubleheader from visiting St. Catharine College by scores of 4-2 and 7-1 in a pair of 7-inning games. Mobile (2-0) and St. Catharine (0-2) will finish the 4-game series with a twin bill Sunday at 12 pm.

Rams Recognized For Fall Success

CLEVELAND – The University of Mobile is ranked 15th in the final fall NAIA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings. Mobile received 53 points for a ninth place finish in women's soccer and 83 points for a third place finish in men's soccer. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) extended its lead, earning 25 points following a ninth place finish in football, bringing their point total to 301 points.

Southern States Showcase Set to Air October 20

Norcross, Ga. - The Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), which grew to sixteen member institutions on July 1, will add a new dimension in 2010, as the SSAC unveils its feature-based television show debuting on Wednesday, October 20 on SportSouth at 6 p.m. The “Southern States Showcase” will feature 18 thirty-minute weekly episodes on SportSouth (Fox regional sports network) reaching more than 10 million households. The show will air three times weekly across six southeastern states (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) beginning the week of October 18.

Pair Of NCAA I Transfers To Play For Rams

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball added four more players to its 2011 roster Friday, including a pair of NCAA I transfers. Michael Raia comes to Mobile from South Alabama, Sam Mahoney is transferring from Ohio University, Hunter Brown comes to Mobile through Jefferson Davis CC and Erskine College, and Cory Fountain is coming back to Mobile after spending a year at Shelton State. Raia prepped at Farihope and spent the last three years as a reliever for the Jags. He struck out 37 batters in 49 innings in his career at USA, including 7 in 6 innings last year. He posted a 3.71 ERA in 2008 and logged a career high 26 innings in 2009.

Mobile Baseball Adds Four Prep Stars

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball program added four prep stars to its roster for the 2011 season. The Rams added St. Paul's Blake Matthews, Thomasville's Brent Green, Baker's Jacob Knowles and Leroy's Will Blount. Matthews is a tall right-hander, that the Mobile coaches are excited about working with. "He has great upside, nothing he throws is straight," Mobile Head Coach Mike Jacobs said.

Rams Add Three Transfers For 2011 Season

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball program announced the addition of three more transfers for the 2011 season. Josh Blaylock comes to Mobile via Bishop State and Satsuma High School, while Drew Esslinger and John Irwin will head to Mobile from East Mississippi Community College. Blaylock is a versatile junior who has seen time in the outfield, infield and on the mound. At the plate in 2010, Blaylock hit .335 with 46 runs scored and 12 extra-base hits in a team-high 167 at-bats.

UM Baseball Adds Five JUCO Products

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team announced the addition of five JUCO players for the 2011 season. Jefferson Davis C.C. products Ryne Phillips and Michael King will head to Mobile along with Lurleen B. Wallace C.C. products Jeremy Williams, Ryan Waltman and Blake Hanson. Phillips prepped at Smith Station and will compete for playing time in the Mobile outfield right away. Last season, Phillips hit .375 with 12 doubles, 6 homers and 37 RBI. He slugged .583 and reached base at a clip of .442.

McPherson Dazzles In Hitless Effort (By: Danny Wild)

Kyle McPherson is back to his old habits. McPherson struck out nine and walked one over seven hitless innings for his third win as Class A West Virginia one-hit Lexington, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon. The Mobile, Ala., native, who struck out 10 in his previous start, has whiffed 48 batters in 48 1/3 innings this season. He's now struck out nine or more in three of his eight starts after never totaling that many in a single start in his previous three seasons.

Mobile Finishes 2nd In Thomas Howell Cup Standings

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced the 2010 Thomas Howell Cup winner Tuesday and Belhaven University edged out the University of Mobile to win the coveted trophy for the first time in school history. The Thomas Howell Cup is awarded to the school with the highest number of points based on the order of finish in the various sports they participate in.
