GCI Day 1 Pool Play Recaps

Pool 1:

2 PM Madonna def. Shorter 4-0: Hallie Minch twirled a 2-hit shutout as the Crusaders took down the Hawks in pool play action Friday. Maddie Bray took the loss after giving up 7 hits and striking out 7 hitters. Carlee Meek went 2-for-3 with a homer to lead the Madonna attack.

2 PM Central Methodist def. Bryan 13-4:
Central Methodist used a 7-run 2nd inning to beat Bryan College on day one of pool play action. Aubrey Utley got the start for CMU and worked 3 shutout innings, striking out 2 and giving up 3 hits. At the plate, Jordan Tollivar finished 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and Rebecca Lipsey went 2-for-3 with a RBI-double. CMU tallied 10 hits as a team. Kristina Bailey drove in a pair of Bryan.

4 PM Madonna def. Thomas 4-0

6 PM Mobile def. Central Methodist 3-2: The 22nd-ranked University of Mobile softball team rallied past 20th-ranked Central Methodist 3-2 on day one of the Gulf Coast Invitational Friday.

The Lady Rams entered the bottom of the 7th, down 2-0 with only two hits through six innings of action, when Korie Fontenot jacked a one-out solo homer to get the offense going. A walk and error put two runners on, and then Brittany Dunson singled in the tying run with a hit to left, and Hannah Beth Baker chopped the game-winning RBI infield single between home and first, with Johnna Barnes sliding home for the clincher.

Alli Hall got the win with 3 innings of 1-hit shutout relief. She fanned 2 and walked 2.

Fontenot finished 1-for-3 with the homer, while Dunson and Baker each drove in runs.

Pool 2:

2 PM Lindsey Wilson def. Brenau 5-0

4 PM Lindsey Wilson def. Morningside 9-0:

4 PM AUM def. Walsh 7-6: Haley Johnson worked 5 shutout innings as the AUM Warhawks defeated Walsh 7-6. Johnson allowed only 1 hit and fanned 4 in her time in the circle. Jyssica Peppers went 2-for-3 with a SB and 2 runs scored, Brandi Richards finished 2-for-3 and Kendall Thomas went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Erin Ebert took the loss for Walsh after giving up 5 runs on 8 hits in 6.1 innings of work. Chelsy Testa finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Walsh.

6 PM Freed-Hardeman def. Walsh 8-3

Pool 3:

2 PM Faulkner def. William Woods 6-0:
Missy Duke picked up the complete-game win for the Lady Eagles, striking out 9 Owl hitters and allowing only 4 hits in the shutout effort. Mackenzie Bowden was tagged with the loss after giving up 4 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 9 in 7 innings of work. Heather Smith led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and a homerun. Keri Hyde finished 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and Haley Munroe finished 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. For William Woods, Ilissa Facchini went 1-for-2 and Ashley DePew and Nicole Hamdorf each added hits.

4 PM Bethel def. Faulkner 5-3: Shawna McAdams picked up the win for Bethel after giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, while fanning 2 and walking 4. Mattie Dotson took the loss for Faulkner after giving up 5 earned on 7 hits. Sydney McMillin collected 2 hits and 2 RBI, while Lindsey Costello finished with a pair of hits and 1 RBI for Bethel .

6 PM Campbellsville def. Notre Dame 6-2

8 PM William Carey def. Campbellsville 1-0: William Carey scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 7th to beat Campbellsville in the final game Friday. Alyssa Boutwell limited the Tigers to 1 hit and 2 walks in 7 shutout innings while striking out 8. Courtney Turpin was the tough-luck loser after giving up one unearned run in 6.1 innings of 4-hit work.

Pool 4:

2 PM Belhaven def. Martin Methodist 4-0: Shelby Watson picked up the win for the Blazers to improve to 3-1 on the season. She limited Martin Methodist to 1 hit and 1 walk in the game. Chrissy Worth took the loss for the Redhawks by giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, while fanning 6 batters. Annalee Carr finished 2-for-3 with 1 homer and 2 RBI at the dish for Belhaven, while Taylor Bryan went 2-forf-3 with 1 RBI. Megan McKean recorded the lone hit for Martin Methodist to finish 1-for-2. The Blazers did all of their scoring with 2 runs each in the 4th and 5th innings.

4 PM Lee def. Martin Methodist 7-0: Brittany Balough improved to 10-0 on the season by working out 4-hit shutout in the circle for the Flames against the Redhawks. She out-dueled Caroline Ezell, who allowed 4 runs in 4.2 innings of work. Kelsey Barnes finished 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, Charlie Wooden went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI, Savanna Bell went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Jenevieve Cena added a pair of hits. Cynthia Takahoski finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Martin Methodist.

6 PM UH-Victoria def. Belhaven 4-1: The 10th-ranked UHV Jaguars defeated the 6th-ranked Blazers 4-1 in pool play action. Emily Bergstrom improved to 7-1 on the season by limiting Belhaven to 4 hits and striking out 3 hitters. Bayleigh Babin took the loss after giving up 9 hits. Brittany Arredondo finished 3-for-4 with 1 double and 2 RBI for the Jaguars, while CeCee Austin went 1-for-3 with a solo homer for the Blazers.

6 PM Spring Hill def. Bryan 6-1: Linsey Dickerson scattered 5 hits and gave up only 1 unearned tally while fanning 4 to pick up the win for the Badgers. Mariha Partman finished 2-for-3 with a triple and Katelyn Hinson added a pair of hits in three trips to the plate. Spring Hill finished with 8 hits in the game.
