Rams Split SSAC Twin Bill At Shorter

ROME, Ga-- The University of Mobile split a SSAC baseball twin bill against Shorter University Saturday, taking the 7-inning opener 8-3 and falling 10-5 in the finale.

Mobile (16-15, 9-8) and Shorter (22-10, 11-6) will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 pm.

Michael King went the distance in the opener to grab the win for Mobile, limiting Shorter to 3 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings of mound work. He struck out 6 and walked 4.

At the plate, Braxton Hamil went 2-for-4 with a 3-run homer, Ryne Phillips added 2 hits and 3 RBI and Ryan Waltman went 2-for-3 at the dish.

The teams traded single runs early, and then Hamil smoked his 3-run bomb to right field with one out in the 3rd to give the Rams a 4-1 lead. Mobile added one run in the 5th on Phillips' RBI-single, and then the outfielder added a 2-run single in the 6th, followed by a RBI-double from Waltman to make it 8-1 Mobile.

Game two saw the Shorter Hawks use the long ball to score early and late in beating the Rams 10-5. Blake McCullers, Mike Miranda and Dadynoel Lorenzo all homered for Shorter and pitcher Stuart Charleston got the win with a complete game effort, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits in 9 innings of action, while striking out 9.

Ryan Hines took the loss for Mobile after giving up 5 runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Cameron White led Mobile with a 1-for-4, 3 RBI effort, while Ryan Parazine and Hamil each scored a pair of runs.

The Hawks scored seven runs in the first three innings thanks to three homers, a triple and a double.
