MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team rallied late, but fell just-short against No. 6 Faulkner University, dropping the series opener 5-4 Friday at Jacobs Field.
Mobile (19-20, 10-12) and Faulkner (34-9, 19-3) will finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 pm.
The Rams entered the bottom of the 9th trailing 5-1 against Corey Black, who had held the team to 1 unearned run on 2 hits in through 8 innings.
Josh Blaylock and Brady King singled to start the 9th, but a pair of quick outs followed to make it runners at 1st and 2nd with two down. From there, Ryan Parazine, Braxton Hamil and Cameron White went back-to-back-to-back with RBI-singles, and then Justin Beck drew a walk to load the bases with the score at 5-4. Black settled down to fan the final hitter of the game.
Mobile had taken a 1-0 lead with an unearned tally in the 2nd, but Faulkner scored 1 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th to take command. The Eagles used five singles in the 4th to put up the three-spot.
The eventual game-winner came in the 6th inning, when a UMobile error brought home Brook Boudreaux.
Black got the win after allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits in a complete-game effort. He fanned 4 and walked 2. Michael King took the loss for Mobile after giving up 4 earned runs on 11 hits in 7.1 innings of mound work.
Parazine and White each finished 2-for-4 for Mobile, while Hamil drove in a pair of runs.
