MOBILE, Ala-- Several University of Mobile baseball players were honored by the Southern States Athletic Conference Thursday.
Braxton Hamil was tabbed the SSAC Freshman of the Year, and named to the All-Freshmen Team. Hamil, a freshman from Mobile, Ala., started 46 games for the Rams, hitting .306 with a .414 on base percentage. He leads the team with 19 doubles and 36 RBI.
Hamil was also named to the Gold Glove Team, where he was joined by teammates Justin Beck and Brady King. At 1st base, Hamil posted a .997 fielding percentage with only one error in 372 chances. Beck posted a .982 fielding percentage at 2nd base, where he turned 32 double plays and had only four errors in 225 chances. At the hot corner, King turned in a .961 fielding percentage with only three errors in 77 chances. Only nine players made the team.
Off the diamond, the Rams had numerous players honored for their exploits. King was named the team's Musco Lighting Champion of Character recipient, and was joined on the All-Academic squad by Walt Bedsole, Travis Bowen, Jared Brannon, Keith Granger, Shane Ikner, John Irwin, Jacob Knowles, Hunter Norris and John Soutullo.
Bedsole is a sophomore from Thomasville, Ala., Bowen is a sophomore from Mobile, Ala., Brannon is a redshirt junior from Satsuma, Ala., Granger is a sophomore from Dothan, Ala., Ikner is a junior from Pensacola, Fla., Irwin is a senior from Long Beach, Miss., Knowles is a sophomore from Mobile, Ala., Norris is a senior from Monroeville, Ala., and Soutullo is a junior from Pace, Fla.
