MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball program announced the signing of St. Paul's Episcopal School's Blake Matthews for the 2011 season.
"He has tremendous upside, and we think he'll mature and get better over his four years here and be a big contributing factor to our success," Mobile Head Coach Mike Jacobs said.
Matthews, a 6-2 right-hander, has been a dual-threat for the St. Paul Saints, but will mainly pitch at Mobile. He is 5-0 with a 2.80 ERA this year in six appearances. He has one complete game and one shutout.
Mobile's coaches were pleased that someone of Matthews' caliber was available.
"He played the majority of the second half of last season sick, and then hurt his knee and just got overlooked," Jacobs said. "We saw him throw early this spring and saw a lot of potential."
Potential is nothing without putting in the work to bring it out, but that should be no problem for the righty.
"His coach said that he has great work habits, a great work ethic and is a tremendous competitor," Jacobs said.
