MOBILE, Ala-- The 9th-ranked University of Mobile men's soccer team won the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship by beating rival Spring Hill 3-1 Saturday.
Mobile (13-3-1, 9-2) won the regular season title last year and the tournament championship in 2010. The Rams will host an opening round game of the SSAC Tournament Saturday, Nov. 3, with time and opponent TBA.
The Rams held a 23-7 edge in shots for the game, a 10-5 edge in shots on frame and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks taken.
Gunnar Steindorsson started the scoring in the 23rd minute when he banged home a shot off a Spring Hill defender for the 1-0 advantage.
Spring Hill answered to tie it up in the 34th minute, but the Rams wasted little time in retaking the lead.
In the 35th minute, reigning NAIA Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Gaetan Massiah knocked home a rebound off Alvaro Pichardo's saved shot for the game-winner. Just two minutes later, Sam Blackburn punched in a cross from Massiah to cap the scoring.
