MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team held off a late Bobcat rally to beat St. Thomas 76-73 in non-conference action at Pharr Gym Wednesday night.
Mobile (4-1, 1-1) visits Xavier University Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 pm.
Dominick Brumfield tallied 21 points and 12 boards for the Rams on 9-of-12 shooting, while Kwame Beard finished with 20 points and 5 assists. Chris Richardson chipped in 12 points and 6 assists for the Rams.
Demonte Simpson led four Bobcats in double figures with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.
Mobile out shot St. Thomas 59% (32-54) to 40% (26-65) from the floor, while the Bobcats hit 33% (7-21) from 3-point range compared to 27% (3-11) for the Rams.
The opening half was all Mobile, as the Rams scored first on a bucket from Julien Sargent 50 seconds in, and led all the way. Up 22-14 at the 9:21 mark, the Rams used a 9-0 run over the next 55 seconds to grab the half's largest lead at 31-14 on a deuce from Kwame Beard. Mobile went into the half with a 47-37 lead.
In the final half, the Rams continued to dominate early, holding a 61-49 lead on a Brumfield bucket with 12:43 to play. From there, the Bobcats went on a 12-2 run over the next 4:50 to pull within one. The Rams had four turnovers in the stretch. St. Thomas took its first lead of the contest at the 5:22 mark on a putback by Simpson to lead 66-65. After the teams traded misses, Brumfield got the lead back for the Rams, and then back-to-back buckets from Beard and Julien Sargent made it 71-66 Mobile with 2:05 to play. St. Thomas scored the next five to tie it with 1:18 to play, and then the teams traded buckets again to make it 73-73 with 37 ticks remaining. The Rams scored the final three points of the half on a three-point play from Brumfield with six seconds to play. St. Thomas' Kevin Hincapie missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
