No. 25 Lady Rams Split With No. 16 William Carey

 

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The 25th-ranked University of Mobile softball team took the nightcap 6-5 to earn a split with 16th-ranked William Carey University in GCAC action Tuesday. William Carey won the opener 8-5.
 
Christie Soulis grabbed the win in the finale after limiting William Carey to 2 runs on 4 hits in 3 innings of relief. Kamaron Strickland worked the final inning for the save.
 
Four of Mobile's six runs were unearned thanks to three Lady Sader errors. Ally Scott finished 1-3 with 2 RBI and Korie Fontenot finished 1-3 with 2 runs scored. Larke Nightengale, Tan Montgomery and Jeana Erickson had 2 hits apiece for William Carey.
 
William Carey collected five hits over the first two innings, but failed to score, while Mobile took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on a 2-run double from Ally Scott. WCU tied it up in the 3rd as Erickson hit a RBI-triple and scored on a grounder.
 
Mobile then took the lead for good in the 5th, scoring three runs without a hit thanks to a pair of Crusader errors and two hit batsmen. Two runs scored on Desiree Truett's grounder through Kelsey Jo Smith's legs and then Kirstyn Joiner popped a sac fly to finish the inning.
 
Holli McLeod provided the eventual winning tally with a 2-out RBI-single in the 6th as the Lady Saders attempted to rally in the 7th with 3 runs. Judy Barber homered to start the frame and Missy Paulina singled home one to make it 6-5 with 2 outs. Strickland got the final batter to fly out with two on to end the game.
 
In the opener, William Carey scored 7 of their 8 runs with two outs, and the Lady Rams left 10 runners on, including the bases loaded in the 2nd and 3rd innings.
 
Alyssa Boutwell picked up the win with 5 innings of 3-hit, shutout relief, while Leslie Pickette was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings.
 
Holli McLeod finished 1-2 with 2 RBI for Mobile, while Jessica Swanson scored three times and drove in 1 run. Tan Montgomery, Judy Barber and Shana Gunter each finished with a pair of hits for the Lady Crusaders, while Barber and Gunter each drove in a pair of runs.
 
William Carey struck first with three runs in the 1st inning as Barber provided a RBI-double and Gunter doubled home a pair with 2 outs. Mobile got one back in the 2nd when McLeod was hit by a pitch to force home a run, but they left the bases full.
 
The Lady Rams then went up 5-3 with a four-spot in the 3rd on only one hit. Two walked, two were hit by a pitch and there was one WCU error to aid the cause. McLeod, Jessica Palmer and Swanson drove in runs in the inning.
 
In the 3rd, William Carey loaded the bags with two outs and Nikki Sanders hit a 3-run triple to center field for the eventual winning tallies.
Mobile put two on with two outs in the 5th, but could not get the key hit to start a rally.
 
Mobile (29-16, 8-4) visits Spring Hill Sunday, April 18 at noon for a doubleheader. William Carey moves to 29-12, 9-5.
