MOBILE, Ala-- The 25th-ranked University of Mobile softball team swept a pair of one-run games from rival Spring Hill College Sunday afternoon in GCAC action. Mobile (31-16, 10-4) won game one 2-1 in 8 innings and held on for a 3-2 win in the finale.
Kamaron Strickland picked up the win in the opener, going 8 innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball for Mobile. She struck out 3 and walked 1. Samantha Brooks took the loss after giving up 1 earned run on 7 hits in 8 innings while fanning 6 and walking none.
Jessica Swanson finished 3-4 with 1 RBI for Mobile, while Holli McLeod went 2-3 at the top of the Mobile order. Brooke Turlich and Ersy Pacheco each collected 2 hits for the Lady Badgers.
Mobile struck first with a run in the 3rd inning on Kirstyn Joiner's 2-out RBI-single. Spring Hill tied it up at 1-1 on Kayla McCraney's RBI-single in the 4th, and the score stayed that way until the 8th.
Using the international tie breaker rule, each team started the 8th with a runner on 2nd. Erica Bracey bunted Dorlicia Martin to 3rd base and Swanson scored Martin on an infield single for the 2-1 lead.
The Badgers sacrificed their runner to 3rd, but Strickland induced two groundouts to end the game.
Victoria Buie got the win for Mobile in the finale, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits in 6 innings of work. She struck out 6 and walked 1. Christie Soulis picked up the save with 1 scoreless inning of relief. Brittany Abate took the loss for Spring Hill after giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in 0.1 innings of work.
Kirstyn Joiner finished 3-4 for Mobile, Hannah Harrell went 2-3 and Erica Bracey went 1-2 with 1 RBI. Ersy Pacheco went 2-3 with 2 RBI for the Lady Badgers.
Mobile chased Abate from the game with 3 runs on 5 hits in the 1st inning, sending 9 hitters to the plate. The Lady Rams started the inning with an out, but the next three hitters singled to load the bases. Bracey followed with a RBI-hit, Swanson was hit by a pitch to force home a run and Ally Scott singled home Joiner to take the 3-0 lead.
Buie, meanwhile cruised, facing only one hitter over the minimum through 6 innings before two Lady Badgers reached to start the 7th. Soulis came on in relief and gave up a 2-run triple to Pacheco, but then got a pop out and double play ball to finish off the game.
Mobile hosts No. 7 Belhaven University Tuesday, April 20 at 3 pm for a doubleheader.
