MOBILE, Ala-- The University of South Alabama Jaguars bested the University of Mobile 70-51 in men's basketball exhibition action at the Mitchell Center Wednesday evening.
Mobile remains 5-1 on the season and next plays at Auburn University-Montgomery Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4 pm. The game counted for South Alabama, and the Jaguars move to 7-2 on the season. The Rams are 1-2 on the season in exhibition games against NCAA I schools and will finish out their exhibition slate at NCAA I Nicholls State Dec. 14 at 6:30 pm.
The Rams played toe-to-toe with the Jags for the first 6:13, but went on an extended cold streak and never got back in the game. At the 13:47 mark, Robert Golston picked off a pass and put the ball in the basket to pull Mobile within 13-14, but on the next trip down, the Rams had a chance to take the lead, but instead turned the ball over.
The Jaguars then went on a 17-0 run, capped by a Bryan Sherrer 3-pointer with 5 minutes left to make it 31-13 in favor of the home team. The Rams shot only 27% in the opening half, compared to 50% from the Jags. USA also finished 12-of-16 from the charity stripe, compared to 2-of-4 for Mobile. UM did not hit a free throw until there were 31 seconds remaining.
The second half was not much better for Mobile, as the Rams shot only 32% and finished at 30% for the game. UM hit only 7-of-23 from 3-point range and sank only six free throws. The Jags hit 22 free throws and shot 54% from the field, while hitting 4-of-9 from downtown.
South Alabama led by as much as 26 with 5:27 remaining.
Donte Walker and Ji Kimbrough led the Rams with 15 points apiece, while Walker also added 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Tim Williams, Bryan Sherrer and LaShun Watson each tallied 13 points to lead South Alabama.
