UM Falls To No. 2 Concordia-Irvine

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's soccer team battled NAIA No. 2 Concordia University - Irvine to the end Saturday, but ended up falling 2-1 on the opening day of the University of Mobile Kick-Off Classic.

Concordia only out-shot Mobile 14-11 in the game, but finished with a 7-2 edge in shots on target, two of which found the back of the net before Mobile could put a tally up on the scoreboard.

The Rams started the game by controlling the tempo and getting early shots, but could not put them on target. Then, Concordia tallied a pair of first-half goals just five minutes apart to decide the game.

Jon Fahey scored in the 32nd minute when a ball deflected away from the Mobile defense to the feet of Fahey on the outside of the defense at the top of the 18-yard box. He dribbled in and knocked it home for the 1-0 lead. Teammate Roi Castro then produced the game-winner, knocking in a shot from just-outside the 18-yard box in the 37th minute.

The Rams kept battling in the final half and got on the board thanks to a penalty kick, set up by a handball in the box by Concordia. Morgan Copes took the PK and went top-shelf to beat the Concordia keeper, but with under 10 minutes remaining, the Rams could not finish the rally and tie the game.

Mobile (1-2) battles 5th-ranked Azusa Pacific Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 pm. Concordia and Notre Dame College will open the day with a match at 5 pm at the UM Soccer Field.
