JACKSON, Miss-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team downed Belhaven University 52-44 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action Saturday evening.
Both teams struggled in the game, with Mobile shooting 29% from the floor and the Lady Blazers shooting 22%. The two teams were equally bad in the opening half as Belhaven built a 26-25 lead, but the Lady Rams improved in the second half and kept up the defensive pressure to rally. Mobile shot 35% in the final half, while limiting the Lady Blazers to 20%, including a 1-of-12 effort from three-point range.
Mobile also forced 32 turnovers in the game to aid the cause for the Lady Rams (11-3, 3-1). Mobile returns to action Thursday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 pm against Xavier University-Louisiana.
Morgan Melancon led Mobile with 13 points and 6 assists, while Davina Jefferson added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Alice Honnery finished with 9 points, 9 rebounds and 9 blocks for the Lady Rams. Nobody scored in double figures for Belhaven.
The Lady Rams grabbed the lead for good with 16:50 remaining, when a Jefferson layup broke a 29-29 tie. Mobile led by as much as 11 in the game.
