No. 5 Redhawks Top Mobile In OT

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's soccer team lead for 84 minutes against NAIA No. 5 Martin Methodist College Monday afternoon, but fell 2-1 in overtime to the Redhawks.

Freshman Christy Lachappelle gave Mobile the lead just 11:30 into play when she beat the defense on a deep pass from sister Ashley Lachappelle and punched the ball past the goal keeper into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Lachappelle is now tied with Missy Stovall for the team lead with 4 goals.

The Lady Ram defense did an excellent job in the opening half, limiting the Redhawks to five shots and one on target, while the Mobile offense took 10 shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The final 48:30 was a different story as Mobile was held to five shots, with Martin Methodist taking 18 shots in the second half and overtime. Despite the barrage of shots in the final period, the Lady Ram defense held strong early, with Anna Maddox collecting four second-half saves, and defender Louise Arseneault blocking two shots that would have likely found the back of the net.

All of the attacking finally paid off for the 5th-ranked Redhawks with just six minutes to go in regulation on a perfectly executed corner kick. Daniel Sofer took the corner, Yalu Borbolla headed it into the box, and Simone Souza was there to head the ball past Maddox to knot the game at 1-1.

Then, another set piece just 3:30 into overtime led to the winning tally. Nicole O'Donnell headed a long free kick from Borbolla into the box to set up the decisive play. Mobile goal keeper Maddox slid to collect the loose ball, but collided with a player, and the ball rolled away to a waiting Mor Efraim, who knocked the loose ball into the net for the win.

Mobile (2-1-1) next plays at home Friday at 3 pm against NCAA II Nova Southeastern.
