2010 Season Comes To An End For UM Softball

GULF SHORES, Ala-- The 2010 season came to an end for the 20th-ranked University of Mobile softball team Friday at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Mobile split a pair of elimination contests on the day, knocking of Spring Hill 6-1, before falling to 16th-ranked William Carey University 5-2. Mobile ends the season with a 34-19 overall record and 11-5 GCAC mark.

Against Spring Hill, The Lady Ram bats pounded out 10 hits and put up five runs in the 3rd inning, while Leslie Pickette went the distance for the win, limiting the Lady Badgers to 1 run on 5 hits, while walking none. Samantha Brooks took the loss for Spring Hill after allowing 3 earned runs on 10 hits in 7 innings of work.

Ally Scott finished 3-4 at the plate for Mobile, while Desiree Truett went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Seven different Lady Rams recorded a hit and six different UM batters scored a run.

After Mobile left a runner on in each of the first two frames, the team batted around in the 3rd to plate five and take a 5-0 lead. A pair of Lady Badger errors helped the cause. Jessica Palmer, Holli McLeod and Hannah Harrell reached to load the bases with no outs and Truett started the scoring with a 2-run single up the middle. Nicole Walker added an RBI-single for Mobile in the frame.

Pickette held the Lady Badgers hitless through 3.2 innings before Ersy Pacheco singled with two outs in the 4th. Spring Hill got on the board in the 6th after three of the first four batters singled, with Haley Brown providing the run-scoring hit.

In game two, Melanie Bush picked up the win for the Lady Crusaders by limiting Mobile to 1 earned run on 6 hits in 7 innings of work, while walking none and striking out 3. Victoria Buie took the loss for Mobile after giving up 2 earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Casey Alexander went 3-4 with 2 runs scored at the plate for William Carey, while Judy Barber added 2 RBI. Kirstyn Joiner drove in a run for Mobile, while Jessica Swanson finished 1-3 with 1 run scored.

William Carey took a 2-0 lead after three innings thanks to single tallies in the 1st and 3rd. Jeana Erickson produced a RBI-triple in the 1st and a Mobile error in the 3rd forced home Kelsey Jo Smith.

After being held in check through 5 innings, the Mobile bats rallied in the final two frames. Hannah Harrell reached on a bunt single in the 6th, moved to 3rd on a sac bunt and scored on Joiner's sac fly to put Mobile on the board and make the game 2-1.

But, the Lady Crusaders answered with a 3-spot in the top of the 7th. Barber produced a 2-run single in the inning and a Mobile miscue plated another run to make it 5-2 Lady Crusaders.

Three of the first four Lady Rams singled in the 7th, and a Belhaven error pushed across one run and put two more in scoring position. But, Bush buckled down and got a pop out and flyout to keep it 5-2 in favor of William Carey.
