MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball program announced the addition of three more transfers for the 2011 season. Josh Blaylock comes to Mobile via Bishop State and Satsuma High School, while Drew Esslinger and John Irwin will head to Mobile from East Mississippi Community College.
Blaylock is a versatile junior who has seen time in the outfield, infield and on the mound. At the plate in 2010, Blaylock hit .335 with 46 runs scored and 12 extra-base hits in a team-high 167 at-bats.
"Josh is a talented athlete that can pitch on the weekend and start at shortstop," Mobile Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. "He will play in the outfield during the fall to save his arm, and we expect him to compete for one of the starting spots on the mound."
Esslinger is a lefty who prepped at Hancock. He posted a 3.37 ERA last season.
"Drew is a left-handed pitcher who will come in looking for the opportunity to pitch," Jacobs said. "He uses deception to get batters out, and you can never have too many lefties."
Irwin brings another right arm for the Mobile coaches to work with. He struck out 8 batters in 8 shutout innings in 2010.
"John throws pretty hard for his size and has a good breaking ball that he uses to get people out," Jacobs said. "We are interested to see him throw in the fall and see how well he can compete."
