
MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team shook off some early rust and went on to sweep non-conference foe Southern University at New Orleans 3-0 (25-21, 25-4, 25-14) at Pharr Gym Tuesday evening.
Mobile (14-12, 5-1) visits Xavier University in New Orleans, La., Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 pm for another non-conference battle.
Shea McBee led Mobile with 10 kills and hit .769, while Disah Kolassiba added 8 kills and hit .357. Kelly Sherling added 7 with a .316 attack percentage, while both Katie Dowd and Erica Rath finished with 6 kills. Brown hit .857. Melody Tenney led with 15 assists, while Katy McCollister paced Mobile with 10 digs.
Mobile out hit SUNO .326 to .000 as a team and finished with a 16-0 advantage in service aces. Haley Wiggins led Mobile with 5 aces, while Charlotte Stutts and McBee added 4 apiece.
The Lady Rams struggled in the opening set, hitting only .100 as SUNO actually built an 11-7 lead as a trio of Mobile errors sparked a 4-0 run. Mobile used a 10-3 run from that point to retake the lead, sparked by three aces. SUNO answered with a 4-0 run and held a 19-18 lead late, but Mobile retook the lead behind three-straight points at 21-19, and held on for the win.
The second set was all Mobile, as runs of 5-0, 6-0 and 10-0 let the Lady Rams cruise to a 25-4 win. McBee served up the 5-0 run, Kaylee McGrew served up the 6-0 run, and Wiggins was at the service line for the set-clinching 10-0 breakaway.
SUNO held on early in the final set, grabbing an 8-8 tie, but Mobile took 11 of the next 14 points to take a 19-11 lead, with three kills apiece from McBee and Dowd igniting the run. Mobile finished it off by taking 6 of the final 8 points, with Sherling blasting four kills down the stretch.
