Lady Rams Hold Off RedHawks 84-76; Allison Michael Sets Record

MOBILE, Ala-- Allison Michael's record-breaking night helped the University of Mobile women's basketball team overcome a poor showing from the free throw line to defeat Martin Methodist College 84-76 on the opening day of the University of Mobile Port City Tip-Off Classic.

Mobile will wrap up play in the tournament Saturday at 5 pm by hosting Selma University.

Michael scored 28 points, hitting 7-of-11 from 3-point range to set the school's single-game record of 3-pointers made. The old record was five, held by several players.

Morgan Crawford added 17 points, Alyssa Lane chipped in 11 and Adrienne Mackay put up a double-double of 11 points and 13 boards. Alice Honnery finished with 10 rebounds, 6 blocks and 5 assists.

Vee Young led the RedHawks with 23 points, hitting 7-of-12 from the charity stripe.

In the first half, the teams combined for only 13 free throw attempts and Mobile built a 48-32 lead thanks to shooting 9-of-13 from downtown. But, in the second half, each team went to the free throw line 29 times, with the RedHawks hitting 20 freebies and Mobile connecting on only 13 of their shots.

That allowed the visitors to rally from a 20-point deficit, when a 3-ball from Crawford put Mobile up 58-38 at the 14:53 mark.

Martin Methodist kept chipping away at the free throw line and took a 72-70 lead with 3:56 left, and led by as much as 74-71 at the 3:09 mark. From there, Mobile went on a 6-0 spurt and retook the lead for good on another bucket from Crawford with 1:51 remaining. Mobile went 5-of-8 from the free throw line the rest of the way to ice it.
