GULFPORT, Miss-- The 2nd-ranked Lee University Lady Flames defeated the 14th-ranked University of Mobile 2-1 in the 2010 SSAC Women's Soccer Championship game Saturday.
Lee (17-2-1) and Mobile (12-6-1) both will advance to the 2010 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. Mobile will play in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round Saturday, Nov. 20 versus an opponent to be determined.
Jamie Achten was the hero for Lee, tallying both goals for the Lady Flames, including the game-winner in the 72nd minute, when she dribbled past the Mobile defense and fired it into the back of the net.
Mobile actually out shot Lee 7-5 in the final 45 minutes, but put only two of those on frame, and Lee goalkeeper Kristi Koudelka was up to the challenge, finishing with 3 saves. Mobile's Samantha Bird tallied 7 saves in goal for the Lady Rams.
The opening 45 minutes were dominated by the Lady Flames, as they held an 8-3 shot advantage and controlled tempo for a large majority of play, but Bird made 5 saves in goal to keep the two-time defending National Champs to one goal.
That goal came in the 17th minute off the foot of Achten, when she knocked in her own rebound.
From there, the Mobile defense kept the Lady Flames off the board and the Mobile offense finally came through to knot the game at 1-1 with just-over one minute left on the clock.
Kassie Ruff took position in front of the goal and headed home Christy Lachappelle's corner kick.
