Lady Rams Open SSAC Play With Win

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team opened up SSAC West Division play with a 79-76 home-victory over William Carey University Thursday evening at Pharr Gym.

Mobile improves to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, sporting an 8-0 mark at home this season. The Lady Rams visit Belhaven University Saturday at 5 pm in Jackson, Miss.

Alice Honnery finished the game with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists, while Morgan Melancon added 15 points and 6 assists to pace the Mobile offense. Adrienne Mackay added a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards, while Morgan Crawford finished with 11 points.

Hope Swindle led four Lady Crusaders in double figures with a 15 point effort on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor.

Mobile shot an impressive 55% for the game, including 58% in the second half to help close it out.The Lady Rams finished 19-of-34 from the free throw line, while William Carey shot 49% from the floor and finished 13-of-21 from the charity stripe.

William Carey led early, but Mobile made its move down 8-7 with 15:56 left in the opening half. From there, Mobile went on an 11-0 run to grab a 10-point lead just 3:26 later. Melancon tallied 5 points in the run. Mobile held a 27-20 lead with 4:38 on the clock, but the Lady Crusaders were able to whittle it down to 33-32 at the break, as four-straight Mobile turnovers started the Carey run.

The teams traded leads to open the second half, and then Mobile led until William Carey's Chelsea Combest sank a 3-ball with 3:25 remaining to make it 69-68 Carey. That capped an 8-1 surge for the Lady Crusaders that started with a 3-pointer from Swindle at the 4:34 mark.

But, Mobile did not trail long, as Alice Honnery went inside to answer Combest's bucket just 12 seconds later to stake Mobile to the lead for good. They scored eight-straight points after falling behind, holding WCU scoreless for just-under two minutes to grab a 6-point lead.
