MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team held serve at home Thursday evening, defeating rival Spring Hill College 68-65 in SSAC West Division action.
The Lady Rams (12-5, 3-1) will host Faulkner University Saturday at 2 pm, while Spring Hill falls to 8-13 overall and 1-3 in conference.
Alice Honnery led Mobile with a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Adrienne Mackay added 15 points and 9 boards and Alyssa Lane chipped in 12 points and 4 assists off the bench. Morgan Melancon dished out 7 assists and finished with 6 steals.
Kimarie Bock paced the Badgers with 22 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field, while Bria Bohanon chipped in 14 points.
Mobile shot 45% from the floor, compared to 48% for the Badgers, while neither team was a factor from the charity stripe, with 7 combined free throws made in the game. The Lady Rams did a number on the boards with a 43-30 rebounding edge and a 15-6 offensive rebounding edge.
In the first half of the opening period, the Lady Rams led by as many as 3 points and Spring Hill held three 1-point leads, but neither team could pull away until Mobile used a 12-2 run to pull away from a 1-point deficit at the 10:08 mark to grab a 31-22 lead with 3:46 left, as Adrienne Mackay tallied 8 points during the run. But, the Badgers answered and finished the final 2:32 on an 8-0 run to go into the break down by only one.
The final half opened just like the opening 20 minutes, with the teams trading buckets, but this time it was the Badgers that were able to grab a 3-point lead, as they led 48-45 with 9:18 left on a bucket from Lynleigh Hughes. Again, Mobile answered with a game-saving run, this time of the 13-2 variety, taking a 58-50 lead with 6:02 left on Anna Maddox's deuce. Alice Honnery grabbed 5 boards during the run and Lane tallied 7 points during the heart of the run. Spring Hill managed to cut the lead to 67-65 with 8 seconds left, but Morgan Melancon hit a free throw and Tempey Hamilton's 3-ball at the buzzer fell short.
