MOBILE, Ala-- Dominant pitching a pair of big plays in timely situations keyed the University of Mobile's 2-1 7-inning victory over visiting Talladega College Friday afternoon at the University of Mobile.
Mobile (4-3) and Talladega (0-4) will finish the 3-game series with a 12 pm double header Saturday.
Michael King (1-0) picked up the win after fanning 8 batters and allowing only 1 unearned run on 2 hits in 6 innings. John Ladnier worked a scoreless 7th for his 2nd save of the year.
The Rams mustered only 5 hits on the day, but Sam Mahoney provided the big blow with a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th.
Mobile manufactured the game's first run in the 2nd inning when Josh Blaylock was hit by a pitch, swiped 2nd and advanced to 3rd on an errant throw before scoring on Ryan Waltman's RBI-groundout.
King cruised through 5.1 innings of no-hit ball before a leadoff error in the top of the 6th allowed the Tornadoes to tie the game up. That set the stage for Mahoney to jack his 2nd homer of the year over the right-center fence.
Ladnier ran into a bit of trouble in the 7th after a 1-out single, but the short stop Blaylock ended the game by starting a double play with a diving stab on a ball headed for center field and a flip to 2nd-baseman Ben Negus, who made the turn.
