Lady Rams Outlast AUM In SSAC Play

MONTGOMERY, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team picked up a much-needed SSAC West victory Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Rams outlasted the Lady Senators of Auburn University-Montgomery 66-63.

Mobile (13-9, 4-5) will next play Thursday when they host Xavier University at 5:30 pm in a non-conference tilt.

Alice Honnery paced Mobile with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added 8 boards and 7 blocks. Adrienne Mackay chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds and Alyssa Lane finished with 13 points for Mobile.

Courtney Thacker led AUM with 17 points and 9 rebounds and Stephanie Torrence finished with 12 points.

Mobile out shot the Lady Senators 51% to 34% from the field and neither team was much of a factor from the free throw line, as AUM hit only 5-of-11 in the 1st half and Mobile hit only 6-of-17 in the final period. AUM did finish with a 21-10 edge in offensive rebounds to negate some of the shooting discrepancy.

AUM took an early 3-2 lead in the first period, but it would be short-lived and be their only lead of the half, as the Lady Rams bounced right back to take a 12-5 lead with 11:56 left, with all of the points coming from post players Honnery, Mackay and Monet Kearse. Minutes later an and-one play and a 3-pointer from Lane gave the Lady Rams a 10-point lead. AUM cut the lead to 32-31 late, but Kyndra Davis drained a 3-pointer to send the Lady Rams into the locker room up 35-31.

The second half saw 10 lead changes, the first of which came when AUM took their first lead since leading 3-2, 48-47 with 13:03 to play. The teams traded the lead back and forth from there until AUM found itself ahead 63-62 with 1:11 remaining. With 48 seconds left, Lane gave Mobile the lead for good on a jumper to go ahead 64-63. Honnery then came up with a big block with AUM trying to answer, and then Morgan Melancon helped ice the game with a pair of free throws.
