Big First Half Sends Mobile Past Belhaven

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team defeated Belhaven University 78-62 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action at Pharr Gym Thursday evening.

 

Davina Jefferson finished with 26 points to lead Mobile, Kyiona Boulton added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Alice Honnery added 9 points, 12 boards and 11 blocks and Morgan Melancon finished with 7 assists for Mobile. Sarah Carr led Belhaven with 14 points.
 
Mobile (16-11, 8-9) will close out the regular season Saturday at 5 pm at rival Spring Hill College.
 
The Lady Rams won on the strength of a dominant opening half, out shooting Belhaven 60% to 13% from the floor to build a 45-15 lead at the break. In that opening 20 minutes, Jefferson outscored the Lady Blazers by herself, 19-15, while Alice Honnery had 9 of her 11 blocks in the half. Mobile set the tempo by scoring the game's first eight points and later used a 10-0 lead to stretch an 18-8 lead to 28-8 with 7:44 left. The lady Rams closed out the half on a 17-7 run from there to take the 45-15 lead.
 
In the final half, Belhaven went to the 3-point line to try and rally, hitting 9-of-29 from downtown and forcing 24 Mobile turnovers in the process. But, Belhaven hit only 31% overall in the final period, while Mobile shot 52% to hold on.
 
Mobile was cruising, up 68-43 with 5:36 to go, but the Lady Blazers went on a 16-0 run over the next 2:38 to pull within 9. Belhaven drained four 3-balls in the run. From there, Mobile outscored Belhaven 10-3 the rest of the way to pull out the win. Belhaven hit only 1-of-6 from 3-point range after that 16-0 run.
