Lady Rams Best William Carey

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball used a big opening half to trounce William Carey University 74-38 Thursday evening in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action at Pharr Gym.

 

Mobile (15-10, 7-8) visits Xavier University-New Orleans Monday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 pm. Morgan Crawford and Alice Honnery led the Lady Rams with 15 points apiece, Adrienne Mackay added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Davina Jefferson added 11 points off the bench. Morgan Melancon finished with 8 assists for Mobile.
 
Alisha Mason led William Carey with 17 points, but did it on 6-of-19 shooting from the field.
 
The Lady Rams out shot the Lady Crusaders 53% to 26% from the floor and finished with a big edge in free throws, shooting 81% (13-16) versus 50% (1-2) for William Carey. WCU also turned the ball over 25 times compared to 12 times for Mobile and hit a paltry 27% (7-26) from 3-point range.
 
In the opening half, Mobile out shot William Carey 58% to 28% to build a 40-22 lead. Seven of the nine Lady Rams that dressed out scored at least 4 points in the half, led by Mackay and Crawford with 8 points apiece.
 
Kim Lewis gave William Carey a 3-2 lead 40 seconds into the game, but Mobile grabbed the lead for good on a Crawford 3-pointer with 18:04 left to go ahead 5-3. With the Lady Rams clinging to a 13-9 lead with 13:01 to go, Mobile went on a 14-0 run over the next 6:50 to grab a 27-9 lead, with five different players contributing buckets to the run. The Lady Crusaders pulled within 19-32 with 3:31 left after scoring 10 points in a 1:47 stretch, compared to their 9-point ouput in the first 14:41 of the game. Mobile closed the half with an 8-3 spurt to take the 18-point lead into the locker room.
 
The 36-point margin of victory was the largest lead of the game for Mobile. William Carey was behind by 20+ points for all but 43 seconds of the final half.
