UM Softball Splits With Grand View

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Grand View University, dropping the opener 1-0 and winning the finale 3-2 in 9 innings.

Christie Soulis picked up the win for Mobile in the finale, working 2 perfect innings of relief, while striking out a pair.

Using international tie breaker rules, teams start with a runner on 2nd in extra frames. Dorlicia Martin was on 2nd for Mobile, Grand View walked Holli McLeod, and then Desiree Truett reached on a fielder's choice when the Lady Vikings tried unsuccessfully to get the lead runner.

With the bases loaded, Erica Bracey popped out to shallow center, but Kirstyn Joiner followed by lacing a walk-off RBI single to right. Joiner finished 3-5 with 3 RBI, while Hannah Harrell finished 2-4 and Korie Fontenot reached base safely three times.

Mobile opened the scoring in the 3rd inning when a pair of Lady Viking errors loaded the bases for Mobile. Joiner ripped a 2-run double to right-center for a 2-0 lead.

It looked like it would stay 2-0 for good, as Victoria Buie cruised for Mobile, but she ran into trouble in the 7th. A walk and bloop single started the frame, and then Buie threw away a sacrifice bunt to plate a run and put runners at the corners. With that, Grand View tied it up at 2-2.

Buie allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits, while fanning 7 in 7 innings of work for Mobile.

In the opener, Mobile could not hit the ball and got blanked 1-0. Kylee Jones picked up the win for Grand View with 7 innings of 6-hit shutout ball.

The pitchers stranded runners early with five runners left on base through 3 innings, but to lead off the 4th, Grand View's Emily Gilbert belted a solo homerun to right field for the win.

Mobile put five runners on base the rest of the way, but could not score and fell 1-0. Leslie Pickette was the tough-luck loser after allowing 1 earned run on five hits in 5 innings of work.

Mobile (18-9, 2-0) travels to the William Carey Round Robin in Hattiesburg this weekend. Mobile will open with GCAC foe Friday, March 19 in a 1pm doubleheader.
