MOBILE, Ala-- The 25th-ranked University of Mobile softball team defeated 7th-ranked Lee University 4-3 in a 10-inning affair Tuesday. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to lightning.
Victoria Buie went the distance to pick up the victory, striking out 15 Lady Flame batters and allowing 0 earned runs on 8 hits in 10 innings of work.
Offensively, Mayles Rodriguez finished 3-4 with 3 RBI and a homerun.
The Lady Rams built a 2-0 lead after 5 innings thanks to a Rodriguez homer in the 3rd and her RBI-single in the 5th. The defense helped out Buie in the 4th when Hannah Beth Baker gunned down a Lady Flame runner at the plate.
That changed in the top of the 6th when a dropped pop up and a pair of passed balls helped Lee score a pair to tie it up, and the teams went to extras after a scoreless 7th.
The teams traded single tallies in the 8th inning and went without a score in the 9th before Mobile pulled out the win in the 10th. After a pair of infield singles loaded the bases in the top of the 10th with 1 out, Buie got a strike out and pop out to keep Lee off the board.
In the bottom half of the inning, Erica Bracey sacrificed Jessica Swanson to 3rd, and Hannah Beth Baker won the game with a sacrifice fly to left-center.
Mobile (14-3) next plays at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. Mar. 11 against Cumberland at 10 am.
