Mobile Baseball Splits With William Carey

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile split with William Carey Saturday in SSAC West baseball action. Mobile took the opener 5-2 in 7 innings before falling 16-7 in the 9-inning finale.

Mobile (23-11, 5-4) hosts Thomas University for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday, Mar. 30 at 1 pm.

In the opener, Mobile scored 5 runs through the first 3 innings before holding on for the 5-2 victory. Josh Blaylock picked up the win while scattering 9 hits in 5 innings of work and limiting William Carey to 2 runs, while striking out a pair. John Ladnier picked up the save with 1.1 innings of perfect relief.

Jeremy Williams finished 3-4 with 2 runs scored and a solo home run to pace the Rams at the plate, while Ryne Phillips each finished 2-4 and Ryan Waltman and Cody Barber each finished 2-3 at the dish.

Carlos Castro, Ronnie Camacho and Daniel Covert each had 2 hits to lead William Carey.

William Carey struck first by turning a pair of doubles into a 1st-inning run, but Mobile tallied one run in the 1st and 2nd and a 3-spot in the 3rd. Williams homered in the 1st and Barber produced a RBI-double in the 2nd, before Waltman, Cameron White and Keith Granger came through with RBI-hits in the 3-run 3rd.

Game two was all about offense, as each team produced 15 hits, and Mobile leaving 19 runners on base. The Mobile pitching staff aided the Crusaders' offensive attack by issuing 10 walks.

Williams finished 4-6 at the dish for Mobile, while Phillips went 3-6 and Sam Mahoney and Blaylock each went 2-5.

Daniel Covert went 3-5 with 4 runs scored for William Carey, while Quin Stokes drove in 4 and Javier Ortiz and Jordan Prout each produced 3 hits.

Zach Magee picked up the win for Carey by limiting Mobile to 2 runs in 5.1 innings of relief. Blake Hanson took the loss after giving up 3 runs in 4 innings of relief.

William Carey built a 4-0 lead through 1.5 innings before Mobile bounced back to take a 5-4 lead with a 3-run 4th that saw Phillips, Mahoney and Derek Bourgeois drive in runs. The Crusaders answered back with 5 runs on 6 hits in the 6th and 7th innings before putting the game away with a 7-run 9th.

Mobile left at least one runner on in every inning and left the bases loaded in the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th frames.
