PENSACOLA, Fla-- Despite racking up 13 hits and building a 3-0 lead after 2.5 innings, the University of Mobile baseball team fell 17-6 at NCAA II University of West Florida Tuesday evening.
Mobile (27-17, 5-7) will return home to host SSAC West foe Auburn University-Montgomery this weekend, beginning with a 2 pm contest on Friday. West Florida improves to 35-4 on the season.
Ryne Phillips and Sam Mahoney each went 3-4 with 1 RBI for Mobile at the plate, while Cody Barber went 2-4 with a solo home run and Jeremy Williams and Cameron White each added a pair of hits.
West Florida finished with 17 runs on 19 hits, led by a 4-6 evening from Josh Huggins and a 6 RBI performance from Greg Pron. Taye Larry and Brandon Brewer combined for 6 hits, 4 RBI and 6 runs in the top two spots in the lineup.
Zach Jadofsky picked up the win for UWF after allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings of relief, while Chris Peacock took the loss for Mobile after giving up 7 runs on 5 hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Barber started the 2nd with a solo homer that put Mobile up 1-0, and White added a 2-out RBI-single to make it 2-0. After Peacock set the Argos down 1-2-3 in the 2nd, Mobile tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd on Williams' RBI-single to right.
From there, UWF's bats woke up, starting with nine runs between the 3rd and 4th innings, thanks in large part to a 6-run 4th that saw 11 hitters come to the plate. The big blow was a bases-clearing double from Pron.
The Rams pulled within 9-6 with a 3-run 6th, but West Florida put the game away with 5 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th. In that 6th inning, Phillips and Mahoney went back-to-back with RBI-doubles.
