Lady Rams Split On Final Day In Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The University of Mobile softball team ended the William Carey Round Robin Saturday by falling 7-9 to Southern Nazarene and run-ruling Grace College 10-0.

Mobile (21-10, 4-0) hosts Spring Hill for a 4 pm doubleheader Friday, March 26.

In the finale, Victoria Buie tossed a no-hitter, striking out 10 in 5 innings of work, with only a Mobile error preventing a perfect game. Hannah Harrell was 3-3 with 2 runs scored at the plate, while Kirstyn Joiner and Ally Scott each finished with two hits and two RBi, Nicole Walker drove in two and Dorlicia Martin finished 2-3.

Mobile plated one in the 1st, three in the 3rd and six in the 5th to force the run-rule.

The Lady Rams used small ball to open the scoring in the 1st, as Harrell was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and then scored on an error. In the 3rd, Joiner doubled home a pair and Scott produced a 2-out, RBI-single for a 4-0 lead.

Mobile put the game away with 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 errors in the 5th. The first seven batters reached base to start the inning, as Walker and Martin provided RBI doubles.

In the opener, Katie Hale led Southern Nazarene (17-4) to a 9-7 victory.

Hale finished 2-3 with 5 RBI, connecting on a 2-run homer in the 1st and ripping a 2-run double in the 2nd as Southern Naz built an early 4-2 lead after the first two frames.

Kirstyn Joiner finished 2-4 with 3 RBI for Mobile, while Jessica Swanson went 1-3 with 3 RBI and Desiree Truett reached base four times.

Jordan Simmons got the win despite giving up 7 runs on 7 hits, while walking 4 and fanning none in 6 innings. The game lasted only 6 innings due to time constraints. Kamaron Strickland got the loss for Mobile after allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 3.2 innings of relief work.

Up 4-2 after two, Southern Nazarene went up 6-2 with two more runs in the top of the 4th after two quick outs. A triple and single plated one run, and then a defensive miscue on Hale's bunt forced home their 6th run for a 6-2 lead.

The Mobile bats answered the call with 5 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 4th to take a 7-6 lead. A single, walk and hit batter loaded the bags with one out and Kirstyn Joiner popped a 2-run double to right-center to make it 6-4. An out and walk reloaded the bases with two outs, and Swanson went the other way with a 3-run double to give Mobile a 7-6 lead.

It stayed that way until the top of the 6th when Southern Nazarene plated 3 with five hits. Hale tied it up with a sac fly, and then back-to-back run-scoring singles finished the scoring. Truett drew a leadoff walk in the 6th, but the rest of the Lady Rams went down in order.
