SHREVEPORT, La-- The University of Mobile men's tennis team upset NCAA-I Centenary College 5-4 to open the 2011 season Saturday. The teams were tied up at 4-4, when Lucas Martins finished off a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the victory for Mobile. The Rams built a 2-1 lead after doubles action thanks to an 8-6 win from Jesus Urmeneta/Enzo Correa at No. 1 doubles and an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles from Guilherme Lorencon/Lucas Martins. Beau Bryars/Preston Smith fell 1-8 at No. 3 doubles.

Norcross, Ga. - The Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), which grew to sixteen member institutions on July 1, will add a new dimension in 2010, as the SSAC unveils its feature-based television show debuting on Wednesday, October 20 on SportSouth at 6 p.m. The “Southern States Showcase” will feature 18 thirty-minute weekly episodes on SportSouth (Fox regional sports network) reaching more than 10 million households. The show will air three times weekly across six southeastern states (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) beginning the week of October 18.

MOBILE, Ala-- Jesus Urmeneta, Rachel Hartley and Jordin Wiggins were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Friday. Hartley, a Mobile native, is a business marketing major, while Wiggins, a Spanish Fort native, is an accounting major.

MOBILE, Ala-- Ninth-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University was too much for the Rams too handle at the 2010 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Tuesday. The Sea Lions defeated the Rams 6-0 in a match that was called early due to weather. The Rams end the season with a 10-6 mark, while Point Loma advances to face Oklahoma Christian Wednesday at 1 pm. This was Mobile's 3rd-straight trip to nationals.

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced the 2010 Thomas Howell Cup winner Tuesday and Belhaven University edged out the University of Mobile to win the coveted trophy for the first time in school history. The Thomas Howell Cup is awarded to the school with the highest number of points based on the order of finish in the various sports they participate in.

KANSAS CITY, Mo-- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics released the bracket for the 59th Annual NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Tuesday. The tournament will be held May 18-22 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. The University of Mobile men will face Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) Tuesday, May 18 at 1 pm in the first round.

KANSAS CITY, Mo-- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics released the qualifiers for the 59th Annual NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship, and the University of Mobile received the host bid. Twenty-four teams will compete for the national championship May 18-22 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. Defending National Champion Fresno Pacific leads the pack, while Azusa Pacific, Embry-Riddle and Lewis-Clark State Idaho are making their 11th-consecutive appearance in the tournament.

NEW ORLEANS, La-- The University of Mobile men's tennis team fell in the semifinals at the 2010 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Friday at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center. The Rams started the day by defeating Tougaloo College 5-0, and then fell to William Carey 5-1 in the semifinals. Mobile ends the season with a 10-5 record and will await word from the NAIA to see if it gets the host bid to the 2010 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship May 18-22 at the Copeland-Cox Center.
