The University of Mobile Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team is heading to national competition after being named a Regional Champion at the SIFE USA Regional Competition held April 4 in Atlanta.
UMobile SIFE is one of nearly 600 programs in the U.S., and teams competed at 11 regional competitions. The UMobile team now advances to the 2012 SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, Missouri, May 22-24.
"While winning was a great feeling, it doesn't compare to the feeling we get when we see how our hard work makes a difference in people's lives. I think the judges could see that and it was the biggest reason we're moving on. I'm excited to have the opportunity to spread stories from our projects to a national audience," said W. Davis Pilot III, graduate assistant pursuing a master’s in business administration.
Ashley Shelton, a senior majoring in business management and president of UMobile SIFE, said, "I am so excited that our second-year team has the opportunity to compete at the National Exposition. We have worked so hard this year and I am honored to present projects that will hopefully inspire others to help the less fortunate in their communities."
During this academic year, the University of Mobile SIFE team organized five projects in the Mobile community, including opening a free Clothing Closet at the Dumas Wesley Community Center.
SIFE is an international non-profit organization that brings together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business. Founded in 1975, SIFE has active programs on more than 1,500 college and university campuses in 39 countries. Through projects that improve the lives of people worldwide, the university students, academic professionals and industry leaders who participate in SIFE are demonstrating that individuals with a knowledge and passion for business can be a powerful force for change.
The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of competitions that provide a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at the international level when the national champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
UMobile SIFE sponsor is Amy Gatlin Taylor, assistant professor of business and economics in the UMobile School of Business.

Dan Robinson, a senior accounting major and SIFE treasurer, said the team prepared vigorously for the competition in Atlanta.
“I was glad to see that our hard work paid off in the end,” Robinson said.
Weston Mason, a senior accounting major and SIFE vice president, added, “We hope to continue to impact the lives of others in our local community through our service.”
